@Val_Mueller_ASU @cjwich 100% disagree. Judging whether it's good enough for the journal is absolutely part of the referee's job. If the editor wants to overrule you, that's fine, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't express an opinion.

@cjwich But it's always helpful to tell the editor how strongly you feel. "I'd reject, but would be OK with you accepting the paper if I'm outvoted" is quite different from "There is no way you should accept this paper, no matter what other referees say" even though both recommend reject

@cjwich Give your honest opinion. Aggregating referees' opinions is the editor's job, not yours. If you "cave", you're giving the editor less information.
