We are starting a new, nonprofit alignment organization, ⊢ Sequent Research, bringing together researchers previously on UK AISI’s Alignment Team, Timaeus, and elsewhere to research how to align superintelligence. We are hiring! 🧵
Leadership at Google DM, Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI have all said they'd prefer the whole world slow down AI. There's still a ways to go — wikipedia puts more effort into convincing you to give $2 than AIcos put into alerting the world to the danger of ASI — but it's a start.
I think it's brand loyalty from when Dropbox used to be an extremely cool company, in like 2009. I was an early adopter, the product was simple and small and fast and worked well, and they'd do these puzzle hunt things via the platform that would earn you extra space, idk. They've now bloated with a bunch of crap I don't care about, but the core functionality still works well so I'm happy with it
@CalebChamberla6 Differential thrust is part of why drones sound so unpleasant, they're constantly making very discordant pitch intervals. Thrust vectoring lets you run the rotors at the same speed and sound nicer in built up areas.
In this case though my money's on "it looks cool"
I'm hearing a lot of business folk excited about the idea that AI is turning out to be a human-enhancing tech, not a replacement tech. Reminder: There was a window of time when human+AI teams were better at chess than AIs alone. It didn't last.

I am very suspicious of those who want to justify cruelty on the basis that the subjects "aren't people".
Even if you're right, why are you motivated to look for acceptable targets for cruelty?
@AbHomineDeus Etymologically, synthetic means "put together" and artificial means "made with skill". Both are kind of true of modern AI and kind of not, but I don't think either one more strongly implies 'real', they both mean man-made.
