A Box of Mangoes

In 2010, when I moved to Gurgaon, two small, chubby boys came to service my air conditioners with an older relative.

They came again in 2011. By then, we had started talking a little more. Like almost every Indian, I love mangoes, and they had noticed that there were usually plenty of them lying on my dining table.

Then, in 2012, they arrived with a box of mangoes from their village.

It was a small gesture. I do not think any of us imagined that it would become a tradition.

From that year onwards, every summer, the box of mangoes came with them. Their mother, who lives in the village in UP, would make sure that one box was kept aside for me.

Life moved on. I travelled extensively, lived outside India for long periods, and was rarely in one place for very long.

The two little boys also grew up.

Today, they are wonderful young men, with families and children of their own. They have worked hard and done reasonably well for themselves. I have watched their lives change, just as they have watched mine.

I do not necessarily need my air conditioners serviced by them every year anymore. But every summer, I still very much look forward to their visit and to that box of mangoes.

Perhaps it is the taste. Perhaps it is the memory. Perhaps, after all these years, the two have become inseparable.

I enjoy sitting with them and listening to what is happening in their lives. And my heart aches a little when they tell me that they may eventually leave Gurgaon and return to their village—not only because they see better opportunities there, but because they feel that people here are slowly losing something of their humanity.

They are Muslims. I am a (somewhat) Jain.

India has changed considerably over these fourteen years. Politics has become harsher, public conversation more divided, and people more suspicious of one another.

And yet, every summer, a mother in a village in UP still remembers to send me a box of mangoes through her sons.

No speeches. No slogans. No hashtags.

Far away from the shouting and noise of social media, this is the India we still live in.

This is the India I believe in.

And this is the India I will always believe in—and fight to save.

Yet another Cadet has died at NDA Khadakwasla while under training.
The 17 year old Cadet was in first term and belongs to Kanpur.
This is the third death in the academy since October 2025.
There needs to be an independent commission of inquiry to investigate all these deaths at NDA. It cannot be left to internal inquiries.
This is unacceptable.

Regarding #Satluj, people should show some sanity. Don’t make it a Hindu vs Sikh debate. Innocent people from both communities were killed during militancy period in Punjab, and there’s enough evidence to substantiate it. So pls don’t demean both communities who suffered a lot.
