@joshtaylor122 If freedom of speech were to be absolutely pure Mr Meechan would not have been fined. And, as much as it pains me to say it, holocaust deniers would not face punishment. There are caveats. It is nonsensical that these will remain issues 300 years from now.

@joshtaylor122 Only when these sensitivities, that exist rightly so, wane, will cases like Mr Meechan be of no issue. I think people today think they are at Fukiyuma's end of history. We still need to build on the foundations. We need to slowly forget the past. People are slow on the latter.

@joshtaylor122 You misunderstand. Our freedoms (incl. of speech) are not pure. Because of our history and the challenges to get here. There are skeletons in the closet that linger. Society also elects to protect vulnerable classes. France/Ger outlaw holocaust denial. One day, these will vanish.

@joshtaylor122 The sentiment of when I said 'equality isn't perfect' applies here too. Freedom isn't perfect. Lives were lost to get here. There are sensitivities that people, who still live now, experienced. We don't live in a Utopian freedom state. You need to understand the rough edges.

@joshtaylor122 I agree in principle, it isn't great. But they are exercising the same right that allows people who hold vile views to say their peace. Anger on both sides shows it is working. Mr Meechan rekindled a vile ideology where millions of lives perished to throttle it. Re-read the facts

@joshtaylor122 The issue we've been discussing is across the boundaries of the sexes. Though, of course, being pro-choice gives people the best of both worlds. Enforcing a pro-life doctrine isn't freedom so I don't personally agree with their views. Then again, this is a males opinion ;).
