Vince Lombardi said, “Leaders are made, they are not born. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work."
Brian Tracy said, “Leaders set high standards. Refuse to tolerate mediocrity or poor performance.”
Leadership is your behavior.
Leadership is not about your title.
It is about connection and influence.
It is turning a vision into reality.
Leadership is:
• Empowering others
• Building relationships
• Being humble enough to grow
• Helping others achieve
• Constantly learning and improving
11 Habits of Great Leaders
1. Be Committed to Excellence
Everything you do should be done at the highest possible level. Your ability to be great and focus on working at the process will create results. Your commitment to excellence will set an example for everyone else and inspire others.
2. Be Positive
People respond to a positive, constructive, and directed environment. It is easy to be negative, but hard to stay positive. Positivity widens your attention span and gives others the feeling that anything is possible.
3. Be Prepared
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. You can't control the outcome or what happens in every situation, but you can prepare how you walk into those situations and your mindset.
The result of preparation: It’s easier for you and your team to adapt when needed.
4. Be Yourself
Stay within the framework of you. Be authentic because no one else is better at being you than you. Once you fake it, people notice you aren't authentic and lose trust in you.
5. Be Accountable
Excuse-making is contagious. If you start making excuses, then so will others. Hold yourself and others accountable to the highest standard of excellence.
6. Be Near-Sighted and Far-Sighted
Everything should be taken into perspective. Leaders take a short-term view of what's occurring and balance this with the future vision. Your job is to make well-informed decisions from your point of view then communicate this vision.
7. Be Detail-Oriented and Organized
Address all aspects of your team - physical, mental, and organizational. Focusing on the details allows you to be organized and disciplined. Think with a clear mind, and processes will be efficient and productive.
8. Be Fair
Treat people how you would want to be treated. Make sure your value system is seen and heard because this is a direct reflection of you. Be clear in what your values are and stand up for them.
9. Be Firm
When it comes to setting the culture, you must be firm and not budge. You are communicating your values, principles and priorities. There are ways to be flexible, but you need to be firm in communicating your vision.
10. Be Flexible
You must be agile in learning and iterating. When new challenges arise, look for new and innovative solutions. You set processes, but the processes must be flexible to withstand the reality at hand.
11. Believe in Yourself
As a leader, you are always communicating a vision to the team. To do that, you must be confident in yourself and what you believe. Be poised in how you present yourself. If you believe in yourself then others will too.
Leaders focus on the strengths of the team and lead through inspiration.
It has nothing to do with your authority level and everything to do with your mindset and emotional intelligence.
Peter Drucker said, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.”
