I truly fucked up not doing my due diligence on Platner before offering high praise for his communication skills (on another platform). Enough was out there at the time that I should have been more cautious. Especially because I met adventurer dudes like him while reporting in Iraq. Deep respect to all who got it right.

I won't take down the bad post because that looks like hiding. But please know that I'm truly sorry I disappointed folks who trust me to be more careful. Most of all I'm sorry to the women who came forward only to be disbelieved and smeared. You deserved better and I feel absolutely gutted.

Are we really doing this again? 80+ years since E.H. Carr wrote What Is History, and practicing historians are still confusing the field with some kind of antiquarian noble dream.

How about I'd just like to know the answer to research questions without prespecifying the findings? And I'd like to read work by others who do that, too. I honestly don't care if the answer is liberal or conservative, but I don't want to read stuff where authors set out to prove something or criticize something.

@Jerry_Ratcliffe @ashleytrubin @avitale @jgo34 Rigorous research is actually the bare minimum, not what makes history History. That always requires interpretation, which always means politics will be engaged in some way. Unless you are writing about something incredibly inconsequential.
