11 Children to undergo Heart Surgery at Lira Regional Referral Hospital

At least 11 Children from Lango and Acholi Sub regions are expected to undergo specialized closed Heart Surgeries at Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

The Five day Pediatric Closed Heart Surgeries which commenced on Monday, 13th April 2026, is expected to end on Friday 17th April 2026 with more smiles.

Between Monday 13th April, 2026 and Today Tuesday, 14th April, the surgeons have operated 8 patients, conducting four surgeries each day.

The surgeries are being conducted by a team of senior pediatric cardiac surgical team, consisting of cardiologists and surgeons from Uganda Heart Institute led by Dr Micheal Oketcho a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in close collaboration with Surgeons at Lira Regional Referral Hospital headed by Dr Bosco Omongo Ekwan.

Lira Regional Hospital Director Dr Andrew Odur says the children that have been operated, are recovering and the teams are happy that they are going to regain their normal functionality and thrive as young people to achieve their full potential

Dr Odur applauded the leadership of Uganda Heart Institute prioritizing to bring specialized services closer to the region to benefit the people.

“ So I want to take this opportunity to thank the management of Uganda Heart Institute for bringing out specialized services to the region of Lango to benefit the people, Of course special appreciation goes to the Ministry of Health for this forward thinking”, says Dr Odur

He says the Heart Surgery Camp resonates with the mandate of LRRH to grow all specialized services and that they will continue to engage the institute for it to become the Launchpad for better collaboration in the future.

According to Dr Oketcho, the lead pediatric cardiac surgeon from Uganda Heart Institute, the Children who are being operated are between 1-8 years with Congenital Heart Complications known as Patent Ductus arteriosus (PDA). A condition where the blood flows sometimes in reverse direction, affecting the growth and the normal well-being of these babies.

He added that he underlying causes of the congenital heart diseases in children may be connected to; pregnant women taking medicine without prescription, illness of the mother during pregnancy like rubella and measles infection

Some of the warning signs of heart complications in Children are difficulty in breathing, fast breathing, failure to breastfeed, recurrent chest infections amongst others.

Dr Bosco Omongo Ekwan, a general surgeon at Lira Regional Referral Hospital says they are really grateful because Uganda Heart Institute teams have mentored and shared a lot of skills and knowledge with them.

He says that in the nearby future, they want to start conducting heart surgeries at LRRH.

This is the Second Peadratic closed heart surgery camp being held at Lira Regional Referral Hospital Hospital Hospital under the auspices of Uganda Heart Institute. Last year the team operated 14 children with similar conditions.
