In her book Perfumes, written in co-authorship with her partner Luca Turin, Tania Sanchez lays out the roadmap for how many people develop personal taste in fragrances. I find it roughly maps onto other things in one's wardrobe.
“Black Magic Woman” – Santana
Carlos Santana heard Fleetwood Mac’s original on a jukebox in San Francisco, loved the riff, and said, “We can make this a cha-cha!”

William Friedkin’s Sorcerer (1977) was buried by Star Wars on release but it has aged into a masterpiece. The bridge scene where the trucks crawl across a collapsing bridge in the rain is one of the most nerve shredding sequences ever filmed.
I’ve been thinking about this David Foster Wallace quote more and more recently
“The technology is just gonna get better and better and better and better. And it's gonna get easier and easier, and more and more convenient, and more and more pleasurable to be alone with images on a screen, given to us by people who do not love us but want our money. Which is all right. In low doses, right? But if that's the basic main staple of your diet, you're gonna die. In a meaningful way, you're going to die."
Not to be hyperbolic but there’s a touch of the fash in the impulse to create a fantasy world absolutely devoid of any hard edge’s that the reader’s minds could snag on. There’s a great review of legends and lattes that talks about this.
I happened to be in a 400-level journalism class called Mass Communication Law in 2010 when the Citizens United ruling came down, and my professor went on a surprise tirade about it for a half hour. He said it was the beginning of the end of our political system-

Flock of reckonomists having cookie-cutter, misguided, sponsored by capital reckons here. Few facts to remember:

Hey old chum, do you wanna go on a Crown board and go to war on wokery and all that Māori stuff? It will be funny as.
Sure. What's it worth to you? I'll go hard.
Ah, we're working on that. Give me a couple of months.
Where the hell is our media on the new Pae Ora Amendment Bill? Among the many other reasons this is a shitty Bill, it literally legislates privatisation of our health system.
This is one of the most spellbinding anecdotes I've ever read, and it’s just Ray Bradbury rambling about a carnival worker he met when he was twelve.
“He said, ‘You were my best friend outside of Paris in 1918. You were wounded in the Ardennes and you died in my arms there.’”
