People can tolerate almost anything except being looked down on.

Alain de Botton wrote a great book called Status Anxiety.

In it, he explains how status can ease intense suffering. He says, "Provided it is not accompanied by humiliation, discomfort can be endured without complaint. Soldiers and explorers willingly tolerated privations exceeding those suffered by the poorest of their societies, sustained by the awareness of the esteem in which they were held by others."

He means that even when people had almost nothing and were in real physical pain, knowing that others respected them and would raise their status was enough to help them keep going.
