📡 RNAV Approaches & Why the UK Got Stuck in the Past
RNAV (GNSS) approaches let us fly precision-like procedures without expensive ILS kit on the ground. With satellite guidance and augmentation, you can get ILS-style accuracy almost anywhere.
Here’s the RNAV menu:
•LNAV → Lateral guidance only, non-precision minima. (400ft+)
•LNAV/VNAV → Vertical guidance via baro-VNAV or SBAS. (350ft+)
•LP → Localiser Performance, tighter laterals (needs SBAS) (400ft+)
•LPV → Localiser Performance with Vertical guidance, basically ILS without the antennas, powered by SBAS (WAAS in the US, EGNOS in Europe). (200ft).
🌍 Across Europe, EGNOS unlocks those silky LPV minima. Great for safety, efficiency, and keeping airports open when the weather is grim.
🇬🇧 But in the UK? We lost EGNOS access in 2021. Why? Another Brexit dividend !!
The EU restricts the “Safety of Life” signal to member states. The UK could have negotiated to stay in… but didn’t.
The Result? Bye-bye LPV, hello higher minima and more diversions from smaller airports not equipped with ILS.
It’s like owning a Tesla, but Brexit means no Tesla Autopilot… just a very pricey go-kart. 🫣
💬 What do you think — should the UK buy back into EGNOS, or tough it out with higher minima? Drop your thoughts below 👇
