#MedievalMonday
This thirteenth century image depicting the Wheel of Fortune is from Rochester Cathedral. Only one half of the painting survives - the lucky half believed to have been concealed behind a large piece of furniture when the other side was erased during the Reformation.
The Wheel of Fortune was a popular medieval concept intended to show the fleeting nature of earthly success. Mortals would attempt to climb the wheel (as you can see the men in the image trying to do) in the hope of reaching the summit where the fortunate man sits on cushioned stool, only for the Queen of Fortune to turn the wheel again & cast them down to the ground (the falling men would have been painted on the missing half of this image.)
The #WarsoftheRoses with all its twists, turns & power reverses was an extreme example of the Wheel of Fortune in action, but I’m sure you can think of many others, proving the timeless nature of the concept.
A real privilege to attend the Art on the Delta preview at Rochester Cathedral

🎓I did it! @UniKent
Graduation day at Rochester Cathedral with an MSc in Professional Practice (Medical Education Management) with Distinction
Completing this alongside a full-time job was challenging after losing my nephew, dad and mum. I’m incredibly proud to have done it.❤️
