Today is Bub and Bob's birthday and to celebrate here's some more Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move gameplay using my grandfather's cast iron drill press! The game first hit the arcades 32 years ago in 1994.😁🎂
🚨🎮 A HISTORY LESSON FOR SONY
This isn't a “Sony is doomed” post.
Sony isn't going bankrupt tomorrow. PlayStation is massive.
But gaming history has taught us something Sony would be wise to remember:
No company is bigger than its customers forever.
Let's go back.
🎮 ATARI
Atari once dominated home gaming.
Then came an oversaturated market, weak quality control, mountains of bad software and collapsing consumer confidence.
Atari went from being practically synonymous with video games to becoming the poster child for the 1983 crash.
🎮 SEGA
Genesis/Mega Drive went toe-to-toe with Nintendo.
Think about that.
SEGA was once one of the most powerful console manufacturers on Earth.
But expensive hardware decisions, confused platform strategy and the commercial failure of Dreamcast helped push SEGA out of the console hardware business entirely.
🎮 ACCLAIM
Turok.
NBA Jam.
Mortal Kombat ports.
Burnout.
Huge names didn't save it.
By March 2004, Acclaim reported:
$56.4M annual loss.
$110.9M working-capital deficit.
$1.1M cash remaining.
Bankruptcy followed.
🎮 MIDWAY
Mortal Kombat.
Rampage.
NBA Jam.
Another legendary gaming company.
Years of financial losses, debt and unsuccessful attempts to turn the company around eventually ended in Chapter 11.
🎮 THQ
Saints Row.
Darksiders.
Red Faction.
WWE.
THQ's own financial filings tell the story.
Several major releases performed significantly below expectations and generated significant losses.
uDraw became another costly disaster.
THQ eventually filed bankruptcy.
Now let's come back to 2026.
Sony is obviously much larger and financially stronger than these companies were when they failed.
That's exactly why this matters.
Success can create something dangerous:
Complacency.
Sony CFO Lin Tao recently said Sony wasn't seeing an impact on its business from the backlash surrounding physical media. Well to me " That means we should turn up the heat!"
Maybe Sony won't change. There's plenty of room in the history books for them too!
Maybe gamers complain and eventually accept digital-only PlayStation.
That's entirely possible. " But I won't go willingly."
But #PSBlackout presents Sony with something financial statements can't measure immediately:
A warning from its customers.
Every PlayStation revenue number ultimately starts with us. We buy the console. We buy the games. We pay for PS Plus. We buy DLC's. We buy accessories. We generate engagement.
Sony provides the platform.
We provide the business.
That's the history lesson.
Companies don't usually collapse because of one unpopular decision.
Problems compound. Sony is headed in that direction!
Bad decisions.
Missed trends.
Failed products.
Financial pressure.
Loss of customer confidence.
Until eventually yesterday's giant discovers that its customers moved somewhere else.
#PSBlackout doesn't prove Sony is failing.
It's the customer knocking on the door.
"History says successful companies should answer before customers stop knocking."
Wake up Sony! History is calling......
