A message from Nancy Sliwa: As many of you know, my husband Curtis Sliwa is running for Mayor of New York City. Today, I want to share with you a personal message about the Curtis I know and why I am fully committed to supporting him in this race. But this isn’t just about Curtis—it’s about all of us. It's about our shared struggles and the promise of a better future for every New Yorker.

I grew up in Ridgewood, Queens, as a first-generation American. My mother was a Polish immigrant who came to the U.S. at just 13 years old. When I was five, my father left our family, and my mother, at just 33 years old, became a single parent. With multiple children to care for, including me, and a chronic illness that made it difficult to work, my mother faced unimaginable obstacles. Yet, she never gave up. She raised me and my three brothers on her own, moving to Long Island when she could no longer afford to live in New York City. I saw firsthand what poverty does to people—how it can trap them in circumstances beyond their control, and how much strength it takes to rise above.

Despite the hardships, my mother showed me what resilience looks like. Her strength and determination continue to inspire me every single day. I know what it’s like to go without. I know what it’s like to never have enough money for school lunches, or to be told that you’ll never amount to anything because of where you come from. But my mother’s example taught me that we are not defined by our circumstances. I grew up determined to prove that I could overcome anything life threw my way.

I worked hard to put myself through college, and after years of struggle, I graduated from Stony Brook University. Then, inspired by the very city that raised me, I worked night shifts to afford Brooklyn Law School. I became an attorney with one goal: to fight for justice for those who feel like they’ve been forgotten by the system.

As a solo practitioner, I focused on criminal and family law. I worked tirelessly to defend individuals facing minor drug charges—because I understand how the system can disproportionately affect young people, especially those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. I also worked in family law to help keep families together, because I believe that children thrive when their parents work together—not when they’re pitted against one another.

Beyond my work as an attorney, I’m passionate about animal welfare. For the past 20 years, I’ve rescued homeless cats and dogs, ensuring they find loving homes. Protecting animals and advocating for their rights is something that’s close to my heart, just as protecting all New Yorkers is.

But there's something else I want to share, something personal—how I met Curtis. It all started in Central Park. I saw Curtis there and we began messaging about his health. I had followed his work for years and it hurt me to see him struggling with Crohn’s disease after already battling through prostate cancer. If he had never responded to my Facebook message, we might never have met. But we did. And our love was meant to be. Curtis is someone who embodies everything I believe in—compassion, strength, and a deep sense of justice. 

Curtis believes in justice. He believes in standing up for everyone, no matter where they come from or who they are. He loves people. And he will fight every day—no matter the cost—to make this city better. That’s why I stand beside him now, and that’s why I will do everything in my power to show NYC that Curtis is someone you can trust. He’s open-minded, he fights for the vulnerable, and he will never back down, no matter what’s stacked against him.

I ask you today to support Curtis, to vote for him, so that together we can build a future where every New Yorker, regardless of their background, has the chance to succeed. Curtis is the man who will deliver that future. And I’m proud to stand by him in this fight.
