Rockingham Speedway Track Manager Dustin Russell confirmed that the scoreboard was working prior to the weekend but a short prevented it from being operational for the races.
@ridged8 @brian_jr38@A_S12@theobserver And since it’s an SMI-owned track, I’m guessing if they were unsatisfied with their attendance, they would move the event to Wilkesboro. I want a cup date so badly but it’s gonna be tough to pull one from a NASCAR-owned track (I doubt SMI will ever do it).
@ridged8 @brian_jr38@A_S12@theobserver Spring Bristol will never fill those stands all the way up again but it seemed to me it had the same number vs previous years. My point is that they weren’t impacted by oversaturation. Their issues are completely different.
@brian_jr38@A_S12@theobserver We just had four weeks being in this region and 3 of the venues either sold out or nearly sold out and Bristol had its usual spring crowd. Oversaturation is a myth and these last four weeks proved that.
No one was negatively affected by this race in these 4 weeks as some influencers had thought. And even if you had Charlotte, Wilkesboro, and Bowman Gray for the next three, I believe we’d still be fine for turnout at all tracks.
I’d like to note that market oversaturation is not a valid argument for NASCAR in this region.
We’ve had Martinsville, Darlington, Bristol, and Rockingham hold races in 4 weeks. 3 of them had either sellouts or near sellouts for their biggest event. Bristol had same spring crowd
The Rock crowd just collectively sang “Sweet Caroline bum, bum, bum.” I think one of the benefits of this track being run by a nightclub owner is that they let the music play and do less talking unlike the others where tracks who does almost nonstop yapping.
@AlextheAdm1ral And the TV monitors were showing the TV broadcast which made the leaderboard unreadable due to how small it was on screen from seat distance. Hopefully they’ll get this sorted out for next year.
How did Kasey Kahne get so good at Rockingham, anyway?
Before his first Cup race at The Rock in 2004, crew chief Tommy Baldwin made Kahne carry an egg around for two days to imagine the amount of pressure he should be putting on the throttle to run fast there.
It worked - Kahne finished second in a photo finish, won a Truck race in Rockingham's original revival in 2012, and he'll be back for another try in the Xfinity Series race this weekend.
