Nothing truly opens educational opportunities like reading and being exposed to (1) difficult and, perhaps more importantly, (2) different material than you're used to!
At the risk of getting yelled at, I think U. S. high schools should assign classics of world literature. Kids should be exposed to books like Journey to the West, the Divine Comedy, the Mabinogion. The purpose of education is to broaden our minds beyond the familiar.
