George Harrison officially joins The Quarrymen, August 29, 1958.

Paul McCartney first met a fourteen-year-old George Harrison on the bus ride to the Liverpool Institute and was blown away by his guitar chops. To convince a skeptical John Lennon that a kid should join the group, McCartney arranged a casual audition on the upper deck of a Liverpool double-decker bus. Harrison took out his guitar and flawlessly played the complex, fingerpicked rockabilly instrumental Raunchy by Bill Justis note for note. Lennon, who was initially hesitant due to George being just fourteen, was so impressed by Harrison’s technical skill—which far surpassed anyone else in the group—that he immediately brought him into the lineup.
