In Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games has the chance to explore a game mode that has thus far eluded their entire games catalog: New Game Plus. Rockstar’s reluctance to feature NG+ is reflective of the major ways that the company would have to fundamentally restructure progression in their games to accommodate for the mode. Using Rockstar’s previous release, Red Dead Redemption II, let us detail how GTA 6 would have to undergo restructuring to fit into the framework of NG+.
Infamously, Rockstar has not added difficulty modes to their recent titles. With RDR2, this could have been excused as a symptom of creating unparalleled immersion. But the Grand Theft Auto series, which was built on being an interactive sandbox rather than immersive entertainment, does not have difficulty modes either. If GTA 6 was to break from Rockstar’s troubled history of difficulty modes, it would mark a paradigm shift for the company. Enemies and their AI would become more aggressive, making police responses tougher. GTA 6 would truly be scalable in higher difficulties, which is especially important for the implementation of NG+. Since players would already have the best arsenal in NG+, Rockstar has to ensure that the sense of challenge defined by their previous titles is carried over into GTA 6’s NG+.
Nurturing that challenge is not exclusive to combat encounters, either. For example, RDR2 has continued to be lauded by the games industry for containing one of the most dynamic and engaging open worlds in the medium’s history. GTA 6 is likely to follow suit, as proven by the 1,368 world events that leaked in September 2022. But if Rockstar was to carry through with NG+, they would have to structurally reexamine how their worlds challenge players. In subsequent playthroughs, Leonida itself should continue surprising players through new world events and mission variations that are only available in NG+. In doing so, Rockstar would develop progression in NG+ not just mechanically, but narratively as well.
By creating an innovative progression system through narrative and mechanical depth, Rockstar Games will have brought nuanced replayability to the Grand Theft Auto series for the very first time. If NG+ is implemented correctly in GTA 6, the company would redefine the relationships that players share with their open worlds. And ultimately, Rockstar Games would empower the next generation of game developers to take risks that are antithetical to the frameworks of interactive entertainment that they have become accustomed with.
