After the war, Feynman returned to Los Alamos to finish some work. One Saturday he needed an old document, but the classified library was closed. He remembered that physicist Frederic de Hoffmann kept copies of the project’s documents inside nine locked filing cabinets.

While waiting in de Hoffmann’s empty office, Feynman began experimenting with one of the locks. He guessed that a physicist might choose a mathematical constant as the combination. He entered 27–18–28, the opening digits of e = 2.71828.

The cabinet opened. He tried the same combination on two others. They opened too.

Feynman collected his document, then left mysterious notes inside the cabinets. One read:

“When the combinations are all the same, one is no harder to open than another, Same Guy.”

That evening, Feynman casually accompanied de Hoffmann back to his office. When de Hoffmann discovered the anonymous note, his face reportedly turned pale. He became convinced that the unknown intruder who had supposedly been trying to enter another secure Los Alamos building had now stolen the atomic secrets.

Feynman stood beside him, pretending to be equally puzzled, and calmly suggested that he inspect the other cabinets. Eventually de Hoffmann found the final note:

“I borrowed document no. LA4312, Feynman the safecracker.”

Feynman began walking down the corridor, expecting de Hoffmann to come after him in fury. Instead, de Hoffmann ran after him and nearly embraced him, relieved that the terrifying spy inside Los Alamos was only Richard Feynman amusing himself on a Saturday.
