At its core, #SocialJustice confronts the structural conditions that sustain inequality: 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴, 𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺.

World Day of Social Justice in 2026 must serve as a clear benchmark for policy action. The commitments outlined in National Development Plan IV will only matter if they are matched with equitable financing, functional infrastructure, and measurable accountability.

The true measure of this commemoration will not be speeches delivered, but structural gaps closed. Health justice and social justice are inseparable. Both require sustained commitment, principled leadership, and collective accountability.

Ms Victoria Mirembe, a CEHURD intern, explains that self-care does not replace healthcare services. Rather, it complements them by empowering individuals to take an active role in managing their health while recognizing when professional medical care is needed. When practiced appropriately, self-care improves health outcomes, promotes informed health-seeking behaviour, and strengthens the continuum of care.

Today, media is awash with a leaked letter of the resignation of the chairperson of the Uganda human rights commission. The resignation leaks just hours after CEHURD shared a formal letter of concern at her office on Friday 10th July regarding her public stigmatization of people living with HIV.

In CEHURD’s letter, we called upon the outgoing chairperson to retract those stigmatizing remarks and reminding her of the landmark ruling in CEHURD v. Pastor Ssempa (EOC/CR/123/2019), where the Equal Opportunities Commission Tribunal ruled that disparaging people living with HIV violates Articles 21 and 24 of Uganda’s Constitution. The Tribunal held that stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS undermines Uganda’s entire effort to fight the epidemic.

As the Chairperson who heads Uganda’s foremost human rights institution steps down, this moment is a powerful reminder that no public official, should be allowed to use their platform to shame or stigmatize people living with HIV. The letter we prepared stands as a record that civil society will always hold those in power accountable.
