🚨 First outbreak caused by the deadly Marburg virus in Ethiopia.
🦠🤒Ethiopian authorities are scaling up outbreak response protocols, including isolation of cases and treatment, contact tracing and population screening to cut the virus spread in humans. https://t.co/wsIPRkIhAv
🧬 African strains show unique genetic traits that could affect transmissibility or pathogenicity.
MERS-CoV remains a pandemic threat—surveillance, diagnostics & genomics matter more than ever. 🌍

Why are human MERS-CoV infections rare in Africa despite widespread camel infections? 🐪
We reviewed ~1,000 studies and found:
🧪 2–3% of camel-exposed individuals have antibodies—many infections go unnoticed.
🐫 Young camels are ~15% virus positive and drive viral spread.

🐪🦠 We published a paper describing active #MERS-CoV circulation in a #dromedary camel abattoir in northern #Kenya, using a commercial rapid antigen test. Despite continuous MERS-CoV detection in that region, no severe human MERS cases are observed. #DFG@MarcelAMller

Learn about the mission of the DURABLE project — a research alliance with experts from 15 EU countries.
By understanding the intrinsic features of high-risk pathogens, we can better integrate emerging phenotypic traits into pandemic preparedness strategies

RFK Jr. has stated that the measles vaccination routinely causes deaths, which is not true. The truth is that measles vaccination has prevented more than 60 million deaths globally. Vaccinating your children not only protects them, but also entire communities.
