We are delighted that Manuel Guerrero, the British citizen living with HIV arrested in #Qatar, is finally free in London.
Thank you to everybody who has showed their support for Manuel and his family. We wish him all the very best.
The incredible group of (ex) @aidsmap and NAM writers, editors and Emerging Voices at #AIDS2024 last night.
Back row: Edith Magak (2021-2024), Keith Alcorn (1991-2024), Roger Pebody (2008-2024), Lucy Wanjiku Njenga (2024), Edward King (1991-1998), Edwin J. Bernard (2003-2009).
We have published four new pages on different PrEP options available - TDF/emtricitabine; TAF/emtricitabine; cabotegravir injections; dapivirine vaginal ring - plus a PrEP overview information page. You can view them all on https://t.co/zA3omqBBMC.
When I wrote about @aidsmap in my chapter on patient activism in #Unheard, I could never have predicted that by the time it was published, the charity would have closed. I’m still so shocked by this.
We need to keep funding things we know work, not just new shiny initiatives.
@oedithknight @aidsmap Thank you Edith. Tears are coming to my eyes as I write this tweet, telling you that this is the very last news story aidsmap will publish.
Things have been cruelly cut short for this year's Emerging Voices. They've done work behind the scenes, had a few by-lined pieces and were ready for bigger things. 8/10
So I wish I could work more with HIV cure PhD student Mauro Garcia, harm reduction activist Tasha Witherow @fckwithfire and young women's activist Lucy Wanjiku Njenga @LucyWanjikuN 9/10
aidsmap is closing. I'm in shock, I'm upset, but I'm also proud of what we've achieved together. My greatest satisfaction in the last few years has been in nurturing and training a new generation of writers, our Emerging Voices. I want to give some of them a shout out. 1/10
Sorry not to put a bigger spotlight on other current or former Emerging Voices: @BakitaKK @rahayes92 Ozla Nuh @bobbyramakant@shobha1shukla @Andy_Carstens Paul Clift, José Carlos Mejía Asserias, Dr Felicia Bamgbose, Dr Alasdair Sinclair, Unity Sandasi @BeauNewham @floriako 10/10
What a joy to help @mercyshibemba find her voice. She also wrote the most brilliant 'explainers', read by thousands of people every month. https://t.co/IwGdITwwKM 7/10
Edith Magak @oedithknight brought insights from the communities she knows in Kenya, a concern for minoritised groups and tough questions about the relevance of some studies. https://t.co/pXIQdKwAU4 6/10
Zekerie Redzheb @ZRedzheb studies virology and shares HIV information on Reddit. His understanding of the questions community members ask means he gets the science across in a meaningful way. https://t.co/MvUKsvpZJF 5/10
