On June 22, 2007, Chris Benoit was responsible for the deaths of his wife and 7-year-old son before taking his own life two days later.
Later research raised concerns about severe brain damage consistent with CTE and depression as possible factors in his deteriorating mental state.
But nobody defended his actions.
After June 2007, the wrestling world did not rally around Benoit. The opposite happened. His name disappeared from WWE programming, the planned tribute was cancelled, his merchandise was removed, and the company distanced itself from him completely.
No Hall of Fame induction.
No celebration packages.
No attempt to rehabilitate his public image.
Whatever role CTE or mental illness may have played, they never became an excuse for what happened.
That remains the reality of Chris Benoit’s legacy.
