The amount of anxiety Indian retail traders are carrying right now is off the charts.
Had a few conversations with people at different stages — new F&O traders, veterans, people who quit jobs to do this full-time — and the themes keep repeating:
- Every few months there's a new SEBI circular. CAS introduced, weekly expiries cut, higher margin requirements, STT hiked again. Am I supposed to re-do my whole strategy each quarter?
- What does my edge mean in a market that's being deliberately made harder to trade? Is being a full-time trader even a career anymore? Was it ever?
- Every study SEBI publishes says 9 out of 10 of us lose money. Am I the one, or am I just the nine who hasn't found out yet?
- Okay, maybe I should switch — to investing, to algo, to prop. But every algo course is a scam, every prop desk wants my capital as a "deposit," and the good hedge funds need an IIT tag
- Fine, I'll go long-term. But every second stock feels overvalued or has no moat.
- Trading is finally working. How do I explain to my parents, or to a prospective spouse's family, what I actually do for a living?
- Will the next circular be the one that quietly ends my segment altogether? Do I even have a say?
- Okay, I made it. I'm sitting on a good corpus. Now what? Nobody really respects a trader. Am I supposed to start a YouTube channel? A fund?
Many of these worries aren't unique to trading, or to India. But they feel especially concentrated in this community right now, because the rules are literally being rewritten around us in real time.
If reading this made you more anxious, I'm sorry. For everyone else: it's not just you. It's a lot of people.
Trading:
First, you have to survive the learning curve with your capital and nerves intact.
Second, you have to reach break even in your results.
Third, you start making and keeping profits long term.
Fourth, people will say you got “lucky.”
@DemetriusRO6 Yes i am in this state of mind now. Last week i have face loss in streak whole week so i step down stop trading just need to revise my data then make game plan again and again start fresh for next month.
Truth about trading - it's brutal.
Tests every part of you.
Losses crush you, mistakes haunt you, emotions fight you.
But master this game?
You can handle anything life throws your way.
If you as a trader can shift your mindset that you don’t have to trade everyday, nor should you! It will help you filter out SO many bad trades.
Most of the times traders are unprofitable due to them executing bad trades, then losing confidence and not being able to capitalize on the good setups.
I’ve seen for myself that I typically find 3-5 GREAT trading days a month out of 20, if I can be prepared for those and execute well, I’ll have a higher chance of being profitable.
I’ve been through the depths of trading.
Drawdowns. Struggles. Highs. Lows. Missing trades. Losing confidence. Feeling too confident. Going on tilt. Adjusting to market conditions over and over. Wanting to quit causing nothing feels like it’s going your way anywhere. Strategy to strategy. Being unsure if this can be career or not. Feeling like I’m so good one day and that I suck the next.
The one piece of advice I can share is that trading is difficult and there’s never any aha moment that exists.
You have to CONTINUE to learn, evolve and show up 100% everyday. If you don’t the market will humble you.
And if you ask me now, if I have figured it out my answer is still no. I show up everyday from 0 and regardless of how the day goes, I reset afterwards.
