Urgent action needed! Stray dogs have scattered this garbage pile into the middle of the road. It's causing horrible bad smells and completely blocking the drainage channel, creating a major risk for an urban flood. Please clear this immediately.

One of the biggest mistakes UPSC aspirants make is treating the Essay paper as an afterthought.
A paper worth 250 marks, equal to an entire GS paper, is often left to chance.
The common assumptions are:
โข "I read newspapers daily, so I can write essays."
โข "My GS preparation is enough."
โข "I'll practice a few essays before Mains."
Unfortunately, the Essay paper doesn't reward information alone.
It rewards clarity of thought.
When an examiner reads your essay, they're not just evaluating what you know. They're evaluating how you think.
Can you understand the topic correctly?
Can you build a logical argument?
Can you present multiple dimensions?
Can you balance optimism with realism?
Can you persuade without sounding extreme?
That's what separates an average score from an excellent one.
Many aspirants spend thousands of hours collecting facts, reports, committees, schemes and current affairs. Yet they struggle in essays because they never practised organising their thoughts on paper.
A good UPSC essay is built on five pillars:
Understanding the topic correctly.
A brilliant essay on the wrong interpretation is still a bad essay.
Strong structure.
Introduction โ Exploration โ Multiple Dimensions โ Solutions โ Conclusion.
Relevant examples.
History, governance, science, economy, ethics, international relations, personal experiences, literature-everything can enrich an essay.
Balanced arguments.
Avoid extreme positions. UPSC rewards maturity, not outrage.
Effective expression.
Simple language beats complicated language every single time.
A practical preparation strategy:
โข Write at least one essay every week.
โข Maintain a notebook of quotes, anecdotes and case studies.
โข Practice introductions and conclusions separately.
โข Read good essays to understand flow.
โข Get your essays evaluated and rewrite them.
โข Create rough frameworks for recurring themes like technology, democracy, education, women, environment, ethics and governance.
The difference between a 100-mark essay and a 150+ essay is rarely intelligence.
It's preparation.
Most aspirants prepare for Prelims.
Many prepare for GS.
Very few prepare seriously for the Essay paper.
That's exactly why the Essay paper becomes one of the biggest rank differentiators in UPSC.

I saw fireflies today, probably after years. It made me realise how we have lost touch with nature. Fireflies used to be a regular feature of our childhood nights.
Recently, Government announced the mandatory use of Indian Standard Time (IST) for all legal, commercial, digital, and administrative functions.
