Shell stopped its 🇩🇪 German Hydrogen Project

Following Norway's Equinor, Shell has now also canceled its H2 plans to supply Germany with hydrogen produced from natural gas. Reason: uneconomical, no market, no prospects. This puts an end to the plans to use hydrogen as an electricity storage medium.

Jan Soppeland, Communications Director at Shell, told the Norwegian newspaper Energi og Klima that the company has shelved its plans to produce up to 450,000 tonnes of blue hydrogen per year in Norway by 2030.

It is not cost-effective to continue with the project. There is no market for blue hydrogen and there are no signs that the market is on its way to maturity. Green hydrogen is clearly favoured, says Soppeland. However, the demand from industrial customers for green hydrogen is too low.

"We haven't seen the market for blue hydrogen materialise and decided not to progress the project," said a spokesperson for Shell in Norway.
