Dear Hon. Ida Odinga, EGH @IdaOdinga
Warm greetings to you.
I write to you with utmost respect, admiration, and sincerity, mindful of your long-standing contribution to Kenya’s social, political, and humanitarian life. This letter is prompted by the recent announcement of your proposed appointment as Kenya’s Ambassador to the UNEP
With humility, I wish to respectfully appeal to you to reconsider and decline this appointment for the following reasons:
First, the nature of the position, which requires vetting and approval by Parliament, risks subjecting you to a process that may not accord with the dignity, stature, and legacy you have earned over decades of public service. The requirement to publicly declare personal wealth and respond to potentially irrelevant or demeaning questioning from certain Members of Parliament would, in the view of many supporters, be an unnecessary indignity to your person and record.
Second, the timing of this appointment raises deep concern. You are navigating a profoundly sensitive personal and political period, while the ODM is experiencing internal strain and division. At this critical moment—when your moral authority, guidance, and unifying presence are most needed—the party finds itself split into competing factions. Many loyal supporters perceive this appointment as a political scheme by the ruling party to widen internal rifts rather than a gesture made in good faith.
Third, the Odinga family has, for generations, stood firmly with the common mwananchi and championed social justice, inclusion, and opportunities for the youth. In that spirit, many find it difficult to reconcile this appointment—coming at a retiring stage of public life—with the harsh reality facing millions of qualified but unemployed young Kenyans who yearn for such opportunities to serve their country.
Mama Ida, your legacy transcends titles and offices. You remain a symbol of resilience, dignity, and principled leadership. Declining this appointment would, to many Kenyans, reaffirm the values that you and the Odinga family have consistently stood for.
Please accept this appeal in the spirit of respect, loyalty, and deep concern for both your personal legacy and the future of the movement you helped nurture.
Yours faithfully,
Wantam
Rift Valley Coordinator
