Instead of honoring 250 years of American independence by expanding liberty, Utah is marking the occasion by restricting it. Under the banner of “safety,” our elected representatives are once again encouraging citizens to police and report on their neighbors, reviving the old culture of snitching rather than trusting free people to act responsibly.

I’m grateful the service members who died for our freedoms didn’t cower at home in the name of “safety,” or shrink from risk to appease nervous representatives. They faced danger so future generations could live as citizens, not subjects—and we dishonor that sacrifice when we trade liberty for fear and call it patriotism.
