The Foot-Ankle Rebound Jump Test for measurement of reactive strength
From @r_tourillon, and @jb_morin
Similar bilateral protocol to @DHMov 10-5 RJT protocol:
Athletes instructed to:
• Perform 8 continuous jumps
• Only use plantarflexion of ankle & metatarsophalangeal joints
• Foot/ankle dominant jump
• Jump “as high as possible”
• Keep lower limbs fully straight
• Push against the ground “as quickly as possible”
• Middle 4 (of 8) jumps used in analysis
"the analysis of the middle 4 jumps showed less variability (CV <3%) on most metrics compared with the first 4 jumps or the last 4 jumps... the mean of 4 jumps (excl. first & last 2 jumps) was kept for statistical analysis"
Contact times in ≈170ms range
Jump height v. low = 6 - 7 cm
RSI range = 0.35 - 0.40
Authors:
"The FARJT has excellent reliability"
"... has the potential for quantifying athlete foot-ankle reactive strength capabilities in athletes"
"... it's usefulness as being an accurate daily or weekly monitoring tool in practice is questionable as the results show that RSI & RSR metrics presented a variability that is greater than the smallest worthwhile change"

UPMC was delighted to welcome @r_tourillon to UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic over the weekend for a series of in-depth workshops on “Foot–Ankle Strength and Conditioning.”
Thank you to Romain and the UPMC Sports Medicine team for making this event a success.
The foot and ankle aren’t just plus-ones to the hip and knee. They’re part of the main act.
The foot plays a major role in how efficiently force transfers from the leg to the ground during propulsion, yet it’s often ignored in strength programmes.
@r_tourillon brand new First Ray Foot Strength Testing Toolkit shows how to assess and then target this key area.
If you’re not testing, you’re guessing...

Concentric impulse is the key determinant of jump height (via take off velocity).
So why does eccentric rate of force development or eccentric impulse matter?
Looking forward to having @r_tourillon come to @SSCSantry on Nov 1st for a one-day course titled "Foot-ankle strength and conditioning: from rehab to sport performance".

This week on the Pacey Performance Podcast...
@r_tourillon talks:
Main talking points:
⬛ Intrinsic muscles are often overemphasized in training
⬛ Extrinsic muscles play a larger role in force production
⬛ Dynamic contractions, not just isometrics are necessary for building calf strength
⬛ Isometric training alone is insufficient for optimal performance
⬛ The foot and ankle are frequently underloaded in training regimens
⬛ How to assess the soleus, tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior

(1) common residual deficits in physical capacities after ACLR
(2)performance metrics to target during rehabilitation (3) examples to restore full recovery
When it comes to foot & ankle testing & training, @r_tourillon is the go-to guy!
This area is the most neglected & under-rehabbed area of the lower limb. His talk will centre around a new rehab framework with data-driven decisions & key technical indicators to look at.
