Privileged to have organized our Corpus Christi High Mass at Westcott, with some of my favorite people acting as deacon, subdeacon, servers, intercessors, and musicians. What an extraordinary group of inspiring young women and men. Blessed be God!
In Jacopo Pontormo’s magnificent Mannerist Visitation, these three moments merge into a single, emotionally charged scene, moving from recognition to revelation and finally to praise.
Today is the Feast of the Visitation, when the Church celebrates the Blessed Virgin Mary’s joyful encounter with Elizabeth. Central to this episode is Mary’s hymn of thanksgiving, the Magnificat, sung after Elizabeth acknowledges her as the Mother of God.
Today is S. Philip Neri, third apostle of Rome. Born in Florence in 1515, he moved to Rome and prayed in the catacombs by the martyrs’ tombs. Known for joy, humility, care for poor, he founded the Oratorians in 1575 and led the Counter-Reformation through beauty in art and music.
On this her feast day, the stunning Renaissance apsidal fresco in the basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome, depicting Saint Helena, mother of Constantine, and the story of the finding of the True Cross in Jerusalem, on the spot of today's church of the Holy Sepulcher.
"Viri Galilaei, quid admiramini aspicientes in caelum? Alleluia. Quemadmodum vidistis eum ascendentem in caelum, ita veniet, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia".
(Ascension of Christ, Sansepolcro Altarpiece, Pietro Perugino, c.1510, Oil on Panel, Sansepolcro Cathedral, Tuscany).
The choir were pleased to share in a joint Eucharist service with the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York, followed by an evening concert. It was fantastic end to a wonderful trip, and all members of the choir are now safely home.
An interesting discovery at Morning Prayer today: the Anglican commemoration of St John before the Latin Gate, recalling the tradition of St John plunged into boiling oil near Porta Latina under Domitian. The basilica of San Giovanni a Porta Latina in Rome still marks the site.
Busy, joyful weekend: Sarah Mullally presided at Mass at All Saints (3 baptisms), Evensong followed in Rome, and at Sant’Ignazio Luis Antonio Tagle preached as Anthony Ball was commissioned. Acolytes were superb, raising the bar for Sundays.
Today is the Feast of Saint Catherine of Siena. Dominican mystic and shrewd political voice. She worked for peace in her day. Her body rests at Santa Maria sopra Minerva, where her “cell" is preserved. She is also one of the patron saints of Italy and a Doctor of the Church.
