Notes from the last year+ of speaking with editors - A 🧵.
These are some brief notes of repeated trends/requests I've had in meetings/emails. Note - these aren't all of them but the ones that I found repeated.
#WritingCommunity#amquerying
One time I was texting my agent (long may she thrive), worrying about whether my work was good enough to be picked up by any editor on our sub list, & she said something I want y’all to internalize:
“We’re not going to compare ourselves to professionally edited, pubbed authors.”
Being agented doesn’t mean you’re better than. All it means is you spun the roulette wheel and your number came up. Likewise for book deals. This whole career is luck/timing.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, everyone is so talented. Ability and excellence are everywhere.
Writing is hard, and publishing seems to be crashing and burning around us. But I got to slide into my favourite author’s dms to gush about their book, and get her equally enthusiastic replies, so all in all, still worth it
Apropos of nothing at all:
QUERYING WRITERS ARE OUR COLLEAGUES. They aren’t lesser than agented or published ones and shouldn’t be treated as such.
People aren’t magically turned into professionals the moment they sign. Professionalism is a journey, and we’re all on it.
20 Korean and K-culture words added to the @OED!
"The adoption and development of these Korean words in English also demonstrate how lexical innovation is no longer confined to the traditional centres of English in the United Kingdom and the United States."
K-POP, K-DRAMA, K-FOOD...
South Korean culture continues to rise in international popularity, and this can be felt not only in pop culture, but also in our language, as evidenced by the words of Korean origin included in the latest update of the OED: https://t.co/6kzGTa7Fs4

@bngtn_noona7 @BTS_twt I'm a 2020 k-pop baby, and I noticed this while watching the various Dec music shows, the SM New Year's concert, and BH NYE concert. Seems like most artists relied on loud backing tracks, but I think Big Hit artists did this much less. BTS really stand out with their live vocals!
