We treat violence, systemic hate, and social division like unexpected storms, but research shows their roots are planted much earlier.
When infant and childhood emotional needs are consistently unmet, the natural human capacity for
empathy becomes compromised. Healing our society requires us to look at how we raise our youngest
citizens. Tap the link in bio to read ‘The Empathy Evolution’ today.

Our care for our children in earlier stages shapes how they become in the future. From the latest Amazon book review:
The Empathy Evolution is one of those books that made me look at human behavior a little differently. I found the central idea both simple and surprisingly powerful: the way we are cared for, understood, and emotionally connected early in life can have a lasting effect on how we treat ourselves and the people around us.

@rongoldmanphd In an international report, children in the Netherlands ranked highest for sense of well-being out of 41 high-income countries. The U.S. ranked 36th. The Netherlands also ranked first for the percentage of children with high life satisfaction at age 15. The U.S. was 28th.
The origins and prevention of U.S. childhood and adult personal and social problems are described in my book, "The Empathy Evolution: Preventing Violence, Racism, Political Corruption, and Mental Illness by Creating More Caring People." See https://t.co/0PuBRH7cQP.

@rongoldmanphd The first and fundamental intimate relationship is the one between mother and infant.
Research shows that a strong bond between mother and infant contributes to the child’s emotional and social development. The child’s self-confidence and empathy are also connected with the quality of the relationship with the mother. Significantly, the mother-infant relationship provides a foundation for the child’s development and future relationships.
The emotional bond connecting the mother and infant is called attachment. When the mother is available, sensitive, loving, and responsive to the infant’s needs,
attachment quality is high. This is called secure attachment. Research demonstrates that securely attached infants are more sensitive, curious, sociable,
and have empathy as toddlers and preschoolers.
Many factors can disrupt the mother-infant bond. It can be disrupted by the mother not wanting the birth. This is relevant to about three out of eight births in this country. The bond can also be disrupted by the infant being separated from the mother, unmet biological and psychological needs, maltreatment, and associated traumas.
When the mother is not available, sensitive, loving, and responsive to the infant’s needs, the infant’s distress is not alleviated, and attachment quality is low. This is called insecure attachment. Although common in the U.S., it is often unrecognized or misunderstood.
Infants cope with this trauma by numbing to their needs and emotions. Consequently, they do not cry, and mothers mistakenly believe they are fine. The adverse effects of the commonly unmet needs of infants lead to various adult social, emotional, and behavioral problems, most notably low empathy.
Therefore, it is critical that we learn more about disrupted bonding and how to prevent it.

@rongoldmanphd Physical punishment, also called corporal punishment, is another adverse American cultural practice. Examples include slapping, spanking, and hitting with objects. Physical punishment conflicts with the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association.
Sixty-seven countries have adopted national policies against physical punishment of children in all settings. They have found that these policies serve as an effective public education measure. However, in the United States, physical punishment is very common. Researchers estimate that about 85% of American children have been physically punished by parents.
