St. Francis died on the evening of October 3, 1226, asking his brothers to sing his Canticle of the Creatures.
Eight hundred years later, on his feast day, the hymn it became: “All Creatures of Our God and King.”
He knew he had a temper. Tradition says he kept a stone with him to physically strike his chest in penance whenever he felt rage or temptation getting the better of him.
