🚨🎙️ Sir Alex Ferguson on the Cristiano Ronaldo & Portugal Situation

🗣️"I’ve been in this game a long, long time. I’ve managed the biggest clubs, dealt with the greatest talents, and if there is one thing eighty-four years of life and four decades in football teach you, it’s how to handle elite men. I watch what’s happening in that Portugal setup now, and frankly, it saddens me to see such poor management of a legendary figure.

You do not bring Cristiano Ronaldo into an international squad, parade him around, and then treat him as if he’s just another young lad you’ve pulled out of the reserve side.
If Jorge Jesus knew in his heart he had no intention of using him, then why call him up in the first place? To make a point? That isn't authority—that’s insecurity.

Cristiano isn’t a boy starting out. He isn't Yamal, he isn't Endrick—he is Cristiano Ronaldo. I know the boy inside out. I signed him as an eighteen-year-old kid in 2003, and I know the absolute dedication, work ethic, and obsession with winning that runs through his veins. When Jorge selected him at forty-one, he knew fine well what he was getting. Nobody expects a forty-one-year-old to run the channels for ninety minutes or sprint like he did in his prime at Old Trafford.

When you have a sportsman of that stature in your squad, you have a duty to manage him with wisdom, tact, and dignity. You don't leave him sitting on the bench simply to prove to the media that you’re the boss. A real manager doesn't need to undermine his star player to prove his own authority.

If people have forgotten what Cristiano has done for Portuguese football over the last twenty years, the rest of the world hasn't. That boy carried an entire nation on his shoulders for two decades—the goals, the records, the European Championship, the sheer belief he brought to his country. He elevated Portuguese football to the very top of the global stage.

Now, let’s be sensible about this. Cristiano is forty-one. That’s a fact of life, and time catches up with every single one of us. His minutes have to be protected. There will be matches where starting him doesn't make tactical sense. I have no issue with that at all—I had to do the exact same thing with Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes as they entered the final chapters of their careers. They didn't always like it, but they respected it because it was done with honesty and care.

There is a world of difference between managing an aging icon with quiet authority and publicly diminishing him. If you need him for twenty minutes to break down a stubborn defense, you prepare his mind for those twenty minutes. You make him feel vital to that specific moment. But you never allow a man's age to blind you to the sheer greatness he still possesses in key moments.

Jorge Jesus needs to step back and think very carefully here. In management, you can win a petty argument with a player on Tuesday, and by Saturday you’ve lost the trust of the entire dressing room. Managers come and go, tournaments end, but players never forget how they were treated when the light began to fade.

You don't have to give him a guaranteed starter's jersey every match, and no player is ever bigger than the team—I preached that my entire career. But after everything Cristiano Ronaldo has given to Portugal, you treat him with the dignity and respect his sacrifice demands”.
