Lamine Yamal means something different to me.

Not because he’s a World Cup winner.

Not because he plays for Spain.

And not even because his father and grandmother are from Larache.

He matters to me because, somehow, two completely different parts of my life meet in him.

One began in the Netherlands.

Ajax.

Then Cruyff.

Before I even understood football, I understood how Cruyff thought football should be played.

That idea led me to Barcelona.

Barcelona led me to Messi.

And now, somehow, it has led me to Lamine Yamal.

The other part of my life began every summer in Larache.

Until I was eighteen, we spent six weeks there every single year.

That’s where my mother taught me one of the most important lessons of my life.

There was a fish market where boys my age sold plastic bags.

If they were lucky, someone picked them to carry groceries home for a few coins.

One day, my mother invited one of those boys inside.

Then she opened my suitcase.

“Pick whatever you want.”

He chose my Nike clothes.

I was furious.

Why was she giving my things away?

Years later, I finally understood.

That could have been you.

Not figuratively.

Literally.

The only thing separating your life from his was where you happened to be born.

Today, people argue whether Lamine Yamal is Spanish or Moroccan.

I don’t.

I see Larache.

I see those boys.

I see my mother opening my suitcase.

I see a kid whose family comes from the same place mine does, lifting the biggest trophy in football.

Cruyff taught me football could be beautiful.

Messi showed me what that beauty looked like.

Lamine reminded me that greatness can come from the same streets where other children are just hoping someone buys a plastic bag.

Maybe that’s why this World Cup means something different to me.

Not because it proves where greatness comes from.

But because it reminds me how much of greatness depends on where life gives you the chance to begin.

Every time I watch Lamine Yamal, I hear my mother’s voice again.
