Our Instructors see moments like this all the time — the ones that don't make it into a lesson plan but say everything about why the Roots of Empathy program exists.
This is the everyday magic of Roots of Empathy 💚

Today is International Day of Peace. At Roots of Empathy, we've always believed peace starts small — in a classroom, in a child learning to recognize another's feelings are as real as their own.
As our Founder, Mary Gordon says, "Children are the healers that can make this world better."

Empathy is foundational to children’s mental health and wellbeing. It empowers children to understand themselves, connect with others, and build relationships rooted in kindness and inclusion 🌱
#RootsofEmpathy
We asked our students what's changed in their classroom since having Roots of Empathy — and 90% said they'd noticed something different.
They pointed to more kindness. More inclusion. Less bullying and fighting. More patience with each other.
This is what happens when empathy is nurtured, over the school, in a classroom setting — it changes how a group of children treat each other, not just how they feel individually.
Swipe through to see what students told us.
In Roots of Empathy, students discover the power of expressing their feelings in a supportive environment. By sharing emotions, they build a strong foundation of self-awareness and empathy, which helps them to make and keep friends.
Having a friend, supports children's wellbeing 🌱

A Tiny Teacher is at the heart of every Roots of Empathy classroom visit. 💚
Through observing the baby and guided conversations with their ROE Instructor, students build their understanding of emotions, develop empathy, and learn how caring relationships shape our lives.
In childhood, it’s easy for children to compare themselves to others. But in Roots of Empathy classrooms, the Baby reminds them that we all learn and grow at our own pace.
By watching their Tiny Teacher develop, children begin to respect and understand the power of “not yet.” They see that every milestone takes time—and that trying their best matters but we all reach the milestone in our own time.
This shift doesn’t just support individual learning. It strengthens children’s confidence, encourages them to support one another, and nurtures their mental well-being 🌱💚
There’s something especially powerful about hearing empathy explained in a student’s own words. 💚
As this student from Naenae, New Zealand, reminds us, empathy can help us think about how others feel and treat everyone with respect — no matter their age or size.
These are the everyday lessons that can help shape more caring, inclusive communities 🌱

On World Humanitarian Day, we recognize the importance of turning empathy into action.
As Dr. James Orbinski reminds us, “Action is extremely important and it’s central to any pursuit of empathy.”
Empathy helps us understand one another — and can inspire us to create meaningful change 💚
