What is happening with the US construction sector?
The hiring rate in US construction fell -0.3 percentage points in May, to 3.5%, the lowest since data began in 2000.
Since January, this figure has declined -1.1 percentage points, extending its 4-year downtrend.
By comparison, the 2008 Financial Crisis and 2020 pandemic lows were 4.5% and 3.7%, respectively.
This comes as 295,000 new workers were hired in the construction sector in May, the 3rd-lowest monthly total since the 2020 pandemic.
Excluding 2020, this is the 3rd-lowest reading in 10 years.
US construction hiring is historically weak.
Construction is quietly flashing yellow.
Hiring rate fell to 3.5% in May - the lowest since the data started in 2000.
Down 1.1 pts since January.
Not a crash call. But when builders stop hiring, it usually says something about demand, margins, and confidence.

JUST IN: A disappointing jobs report. The US economy added 57,000 jobs in June (below expectations of 115k). Hospitality jobs decline by -61k. Plus, April and May were revised lower by -74,000.
The unemployment rate fell to 4.2% --> the lowest in a year, but mainly due to a big drop in people job hunting.
The bad news = Wages aren’t keeping up with inflation. Wage gains were 3.5% in the past year, which is below ~4% inflation.
So Putin responds to Ukraine’s successful attacks on Russian oil depots - by targeting innocent civilians in Kyiv and murdering women and children. The Russian President is going to lose his revolting war, which he never should have started. But the truth is that Western governments are doing nothing like enough to bring him to the negotiating table. Why won’t we systematically take out the shadow fleet? Why won’t we give the Ukrainians the hundreds of billions of frozen assets? And why the hell is the UK - of all countries - now buying Russian aviation fuel, even if it has been refined in third countries, under a loophole recently opened by Keir Starmer? This means British cash is helping to fund Putin’s war machine. It’s a total disgrace and if Starmer wants a legacy he should end the practice now.
Not getting the coverage it deserves is the ongoing collapse of the Russian bond market.
With non-resident holders of Russian bonds now at less than 3%, and the only buyers being Russian banks that are FORCED to purchase using government repo cash, Russia's pension funds and insurance companies are the last standing, but now liquidating as the dash for cash continues.
Interest rates of 50% likely on the horizon, as the 1990's returns.
More 15th century problems for Russia, as the land that time forgot sacrifices everything to continue the war.
Russian Duma npw concerned that the Kremlin's ongoing attempts to hide the fuel crisis will lead to starvation.
"Our government is hiding the real scale of the fuel crisis from citizens, which is currently causing about 30% of the capacity of Russian oil refineries to be idle" - Russian State Duma deputy Nina Ostashina
