Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, known as Bruddah Iz, was a Hawaiian singer and ukulele player whose gentle voice introduced traditional Hawaiian music to millions around the world. He is best remembered for his medley of Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World.

Born in Honolulu in 1959, Kamakawiwoʻole grew up in a musical family and formed the band Makaha Sons as a teenager.

His breakthrough came with the 1993 album Facing Future, which featured his iconic medley of Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World. Recorded in a single late-night take, it became the best-selling Hawaiian album of all time.

Kamakawiwoʻole struggled with severe obesity throughout his life and suffered from serious health problems for many years. He continued performing despite his declining health and often relied on oxygen during concerts.

He died from respiratory failure in 1997 at the age of 38. Thousands attended his funeral, the Hawaiian flag flew at half-staff in his honor, and his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach. https://t.co/Pp0QTJAMFc
