The Royal Palace of #Madrid 🇪🇸 stands on the site of a 9th-century Muslim fortress and later Alcázar, destroyed by fire in 1734. Commissioned by Philip V, construction began in 1738 and finished in 1764 under Charles III. Designed in baroque style with Berniniesque influences by Filippo Juvarra and Giovanni Battista Sacchetti (plus neoclassical elements by Francesco Sabatini), it features a grand square layout, central courtyard, projecting wings, stone façade with Ionic columns, and opulent interiors. It's Europe's largest royal palace by floor area (3.418 rooms).
Antoni Gaudi’s breathtaking Sagrada Família is now officially the tallest church in the world. The placement of the first part of the cross on the central Tower of Jesus Christ saw the building reach a height of 162.9-metres — taking the tallest church title from Germany’s Ulm Minster which had held it since 1890.
Works first started on the Sagrada Família in 1882 and have been ongoing for more than 140 years. The ambition is to complete the central tower in 2026 to coincide with the centenary of Gaudi’s death.
