If he was truly "just" Harry I'd agree with you, 100%

The twist is, a Prince (allegedly) wanted to adopt his late Lady mother's family name and took his idea to the Earl of the House - the man charged with keeping the legacy.

Such an action would have consequences.

Especially as the Prince also intends to cling to his princely and ducal titles.

For me and you and all the other commoners out there, sure - a simple registration and the deed is done.

But for Harry to change his Windsor surname for Spencer, in honour of his aristocratic mother, while still kicking around as a prince AND duke ... Crikey 👀

I, personally, admire the accord you draw to the inclusion of Mountbatten as a surname to our late Queen's descendants.
Sure, the Sussex broadsides regarding their wannabe change of identity is cause for concern (albeit deserving of derision).
But where lies the actual threat?

Small wonder the Earl brought up the legalities of such a(n alleged) request as this goes beyond the realms of 'mere commoners '.

It's not "just a rebrand". Names reflect validity and worth.
The very obvious play is for validation to the House of Spencer via Diana's connection.

I've been thinking about this, in terms of believability - only because you brought it up.

Harry "asking" rings true.

As in, according to his account, he told the late Queen they wanted to name a daughter after her and she was pleased - although later reports indicate she didn't know they intended to use her pet name.
This makes sense. Many granddaughters bear her given name, Elizabeth. Why would she think otherwise?

Same goes for the Spencer surname. Except, in this case, there were a ton of legalities involved - as the Earl reportedly pointed out.

It also stands to reason that the Earl advised the Crown of Harry's approach. He is, after all, an aristocrat, beholden to the Monarch.

It's interesting to me that none of the subsequent surname changes have been bandied about by stupid Prince Harry himself - only his Instagram-loving <🤦‍♀️> wife.

I honestly wonder what surname he'd choose to thoroughly separate himself from the heritage he claims to loathe. Harry Smith? Jones?

The monarchy IS all important to the Monarch. Shouldn't be any other way.

It's not likely that anyone other than William and his children will ever have to step up to the plate.
Not Harry. Not Edward. Certainly not their offspring

Leaving the website LoS intact reflects an aura of stability ie maintaining tradition as opposed to fluctuation according to public opinion.

Let's face it: if (IF!) it ever came about that Harry was next in line, his accession would have to ratified by Parliament who, in turn, would definitely take suitability into account.

What do you think his chances are of actually taking the throne?

Compare this to the idea of immediately negative PR if the website was updated to remove Harry and his spawn.

Not only would this undermine the stability of the monarchy, such an action would just be fodder for you-know-who to play victim.

Keep the faith. Just because it's on the internet, it doesn't mean it's the be all, end all 😉
