If you actually look at the data, Sneijder won the journalists' vote. If the award hadn't merged that year, Sneijder would have won the traditional Ballon d'Or. It wasn't "corruption" it was the fact that global players and managers overwhelmingly voted for Messi because Messi scored 60 goals for club and country and was structurally the best footballer on the planet. Sneijder wasn't even the undisputed best player at Inter Milan that season. Diego Milito was their Champions League final hero and Serie A MVP. Sneijder's form completely fell off a cliff in the second half of 2010, whereas Messi was a relentless machine all year round.

Bringing up Jorginho is a joke 🤣 Just completely exposes your casual bias. Jorginho was a tactical cog in two great, system driven teams (Chelsea and Italy). He was not the best individual player in the world. He wasn't even the best player at Chelsea (Kanté was) or Italy (Donnarumma was named Player of the Tournament at the Euros).
Messi in 2021 finally broke his international curse by winning the Copa América. He didn't just win it; he completely broke the tournament. He was the Top Scorer, Top Assister, and named Player of the Tournament. He had 44 goal contributions that year while dragging Argentina and a collapsing Barcelona team on his back.
