@chuckletown That's a good point too. In this situation, the Joker represents survival. So having him reject it fully is a type of suicide. To me I think the ideal outcome would be him deciding to reject the cruelty of the persona but then finding some way to reclaim the positive aspects.
@chuckletown Yeah, I agree on that; he literally says to her "I can't live without you" and he was going to be executed anyway. But I guess the writers had to keep him alive so they could have their shocking final twist (the more I think about it the more I hate that final scene).
Oh man...it's hard to tell what Joaquin is saying here but it really does look like she's saying, "It's not, don't say that." So it seems like he did make a negative comment about the movie?
If in fact this was the real conversation then I do feel really bad for Joaquin and Gaga. She tried to cheer him up but both know what Todd did.

No idea if the last thing I RTed is true or just a rumor but parts of the movie (particularly the jarring final scene) do have the feel of something that was rewritten at the last minute.
I remember someone in Venice Film Festival Premiere said that Joaquin & Todd Phillips got up in the middle of the movie ๐ค (Gaga stayed with her fiancรฉ) & they only came back for the ending standing ovation ๐ also there's a clip of Joaquin (this is speculation) but apparently reading their lips it looks like he told Gaga the film was shit or something cuz she was like "No it's not, why?" & he was moving his head "yes" & with the streets saying the #JokerFolieADeux movie was supposed to end differently, go in a different direction, but it was severely changed in post-production... so now putting all the pieces together, I can't stop thinking that the reason why Joaquin pulled Todd out of the Premiere screening was probably to argue with him & complain to him about the final cut of the movie ๐๐๐
I think he wasn't happy at all with the changes ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
And ofc I can tell Gaga wasn't either, because she went on to do her own Harlequin album because she was left so dissatisfied with her participation in the film (and with the Soundtrack featuring Lee's awful on purpose vocals ๐), she felt like there was still more that she wanted to do with 'Lee', more that she needed to say with her, she did it through her music on this album... and then to end it all ๐ญ that interview of Gaga & Joaquin looking at eachother in silence when asked if the movie met all they expectations.... then Gaga laughs & says "tell 'em how you feel Joaquin!" ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญโฐ๏ธ๐
@chuckletown Though the movie didn't communicate that as clearly as it could. Some people have interpreted it as just him being too broken to maintain the persona after he was assaulted by the guards. (maybe it's a cope but I'd prefer to think the former; the latter is more depressing)
@chuckletown I was disappointed in Arthur for bullying him, but I think Arthur was disappointed with himself after that moment too, which (imo) was what led him to renounce the Joker persona. He saw how far he was slipping and how much of his previous self he'd lost.
@chuckletown I can appreciate certain things about what this movie was trying to do but the ending felt gratuitous and sadistic, not just toward Arthur himself but toward anyone who cared about him.
@chuckletown All this to say it seems inevitable that he's not his best self at this point. The softness has been beaten out of him. He still recognizes eventually that the Joker is a bully and he doesn't want to be that. Tho the movie punishes him for trying to make the right choice, too.
@maxnjaxn The "musical" element is pretty understated, not sure the songs needed to be there but it also didn't detract from the experience for me. Joaquin isn't a strong singer but the somewhat halting and weak quality of his singing felt appropriate and oddly poignant.
@maxnjaxn I didn't hate it as much as many people seem to, I thought it had some good moments, but (vague spoilers) it is fucking BLEAK. They really double down on the tragic elements of the first movie. I was just sitting there at the end like "...well, fuck."
