Yesterday HQ ARRC hosted Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury.
Dr Williams delivered a lecture examining faith, authority, and the interaction between religious institutions and political power. His insights reinforced the importance of cultural and moral awareness in developing a more comprehensive understanding of adversaries and the operational environments in which they operate.
Professional military education engagements such as this strengthen our ability to think critically, operate effectively, and maintain a broader perspective across the spectrum of modern conflict.

ROWAN WILLIAMS: THE DIABOLICAL IS EVERYWHERE by Freddie Sayers (@freddiesayers)
Last week, Rowan Williams referred to American political culture as ‘demonic’. Predictably, it caused a stir on social media, with Right-leaning Americans duly expressing outrage and crying foul. But what exactly did he mean by it?
He told the UnHerd Club:
‘I’m rather old-fashioned in believing in the Devil. I actually do believe that there are malign forces in the universe and that people who may not have consciously malign or diabolical designs can be manipulated and exploited by those destructive forces.’
‘The Devil is at work in you and me. The Devil is at work in every institution.
‘The demonic is the erosion of standards of truthfulness in public life and the normalisation of violence in word and deed.’

Sarah Mullally was installed as Archbishop of Canterbury on 25 March. The ceremony was – appropriately – joyful and splendid. But I would guess that Sarah is feeling just a bit of that never-the-same-again apprehension. Now you are Out There. You’re responsible for something happening that is in every way beyond you. You will be exposed to unrealistic expectation and unreasonable attack. You know you are going to fail in all sorts of ways. And you need to know that the weight and importance of what is put into your hands is such that it will survive your failures. I hope there will always be people around to tell Sarah this.

“Every archbishop starts, like every president or prime minister: with expectations being thrown at them. Realising you’re not going to be able to meet them is part of the job."

"We need to pay attention to the imagination of newcomers, rather than resorting to rhetoric that effectively depicts every migrant either as an individual in search of security at all costs, or as a plain enemy of all we think is humanly significant."
