Real Madrid almost never part with a peak-age, high-performing superstar. They are among a select group of clubs to have poured more money into the Premier League than they have received from it.

Drilling down into their Premier League dealings, the three biggest transactions involving moves to the Bernabeu are the signings of Eden Hazard from Chelsea in 2019, Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 and Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009.

In each case, the selling club were reluctant to part with their talisman, but ultimately bowed to the player’s determination to join Madrid.

It is a similar story with Madrid’s biggest rivals Barcelona, where the highest fees have been spent on players arriving from the Premier League rather than moving in the opposite direction.

If Arsenal get a deal for Vinicius Jr over the line, it could signal a seismic shift in the status quo.
