Wajida Tabassum, Ismat Chughtai & Qurratulain Haider - three stalwarts of the Urdu fiction writing during the 20th century.
Krishan Chander, in November 1942, wrote, "ab ye haal hai ke Ismat ka naam aate hai mard afsana-nigaaro (story writers) ko daure (fits) paDne lagte hain. Sharminda ho rahe hain. Aap hi aap Khafiif (ashamed) hue jaa rahe hain. Ye dibacha (introduction) bhi usi Khifat (embrassement) ko miTane ka ek natija hai."
Krishan was writing the introduction to one of her books & was telling that how male writers were dismissive of Ismat's writings initially. They used to say that some man must be writing 'her stories', later on they started calling her stories of low level and disgraceful. After that they classified her as 'women writer'. But, Ismat had established herself as a writer.
Ismat alongwith Rashid Jahan, Qurratulain, Begum Hijab and others created a space for women in Urdu literature.
