Can Fantom Rise Again? Whales, Sonic, and the Fight for Redemption
Fantom, a shining star in the 2021 bull run, has faced its fair share of challenges in recent years. From Founder Andre Cronje’s abrupt hiatus, liquidations of prominent figures like Harry Yeh and Roosh, and the infamous Multichain exploit, the “fastest, most scalable EVM-compatible blockchain” has struggled to maintain its momentum. Is there a path forward?
Heads Down, Tech Up:
Amidst the negativity, Fantom hasn’t been idle. The team has been diligently working on Sonic, a next-generation tech stack promising far superior scalability and performance compared to its current Opera chain. This technological leap could (frankly should) be the game-changer Fantom needs, offering developers a powerful platform to build upon and providing a unique competitive advantage.
But in a landscape where every chain is “fast and scalable”, technology alone is no longer enough to conjure up excitement and parabolic adoption. While we’re all excited about Sonic, Fantom has recognized the need for a cultural and ideological shift and has recently taken the first steps in emphasizing community development and increased trust.
Is it finally the moment we have been waiting for? Has the “tech first” narrative come to fruition and is the “business development/ marketing” ready for center stage?
Beyond Tech: Community and Engagement
Is it time to capitalize on the anticipation of the future and set a new narrative for Fantom? Let’s pick apart and analyze the playbooks of chains like Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base. We need to make Fantom a place builders want to build again.
We have the opportunity to empower new builders with incentives, top tier mentorship, promote liquidity, bring existing household name protocols to Fantom from other chains, introduce more LSTs/ LBPs options, CDP protocols, iGaming, eGaming, Prediction markets, lending markets, community influencers and so much more.
Rebuilding
For the past three years, I’ve silently built my $FTM position by securing the network consistently and max-locking on my validator nodes. As of late, I see an amazing opportunity for Fantom, and want to lend my voice and resources to further those efforts.
After some discussion with the team at Fantom, here are some key things I am excited to potentially see from the Fantom Foundation in the coming months:
1. Native Stablecoin Necessity:
The lack of a native stablecoin has long been a pain point for Fantom. It limits DeFi activity and exposes users and protocols to unwanted risks and inconvenience of an array of fragmented liquidity via multiple bridged stable offerings. Deploying a stablecoin on-chain enhances DeFi capabilities, attracts liquidity, provides the essential stability for users, and will hopefully jumpstart the migration of user funds from other chains back to Fantom.
2. Sonic: Scaling to New Heights:
The highly anticipated Sonic upgrade promises a revolution in scalability and performance. Imagine near-instant transactions with minimal fees — that’s what Sonic aims to achieve. The foundation is pouring resources into the successful rollout of Sonic, understanding its potential to attract developers and unlock a new era of growth for Fantom. I anticipate a growing desire and adoption for Fantom Sonic Stack chains as well as an increase in node operators thanks to the new Sonic upgrade.
Sonic aims to address some of the previous pain points of Opera, which undoubtedly will attract new and old users to the chain. The prospect of being able to simply upgrade the chain rather than hardfork and further fragment liquidity/ community is testament to the fact that Fantom Opera to Sonic is more of a significant evolution than it is an end of an era.
3. Building a Dream Team:
A strong team is fundamental to any successful chain. The foundation is focused on expanding its core team in strategic areas like marketing, business development, deal flow, venture capital, and enterprise partnerships. These additions will enable Fantom to forge meaningful collaborations, attract strategic investments, and drive adoption within established industries.
Whales: creating ripples for the Comeback Wave:
This is where I, and hopefully other whales, come in. By actively supporting native projects, helping provide sticky liquidity to projects, engaging with the community, and leveraging our networks, I want to inspire a new wave of ecosystem growth, attracting new builders and instilling greater confidence into this community.
But let me be clear: I am not a savior or knight in shining armor. I’m not here to pump your bags. I’m not here to help anyone repeg. I’m not here to sweep your floor. I’m not here to recover protocols or users after an exploit. I’m not here to fund grants.
Rather, my goal is to help the Fantom team further accelerate the company’s continued growth.
Fantom’s Fundamentals Remain Strong:
Despite its setbacks, Fantom’s core strengths shouldn’t be dismissed. It remains a robust chain with speed, strong network security, impressive infrastructure, including partnerships with Chainlink, Pyth, The Graph, and others. A vibrant community, albeit smaller than before, remains, fueled by genuine passion for the chain.
Fantom has the potential to be a chain of true innovation and not just forks. Not to be underestimated, Andre Cronje has publicly discussed building 4 new DeFi primitives exclusively on Fantom. Given Cronje’s proven ability to attract attention and liquidity, this development adds a bullish layer to Fantom’s potential as a leading DeFi destination in the future.
The Road Ahead:
Delivering on the promise of Sonic, fostering a healthy community, and attracting top-tier talent are crucial hurdles. But with focused efforts, community support, and the backing of key players like yourself, Fantom can rise as a true leader in the blockchain space..
How much do you have to pay for 1K TXs on each chain?
#FantomSonic can win the TPS race, "#Fantom can easily run 14 PayPal-sized companies" and at the same time, #FantomOpera is still winning the Fees race!
8088.7x cheaper than #ETH, even when comparing with Opera only! 😎
$FTM
Consider this logic, everyone:
1️⃣ PayPal handled 22 billion payments in 2022
2️⃣ Sonic handles 10,000 ERC-20 transfers per second (each similar to a PayPal payment)
3️⃣ Hence, #Fantom can easily run 14 PayPal-sized companies
The future is in sight, and it's undeniably fast 👇
@AndreCronjeTech Nah,just delay the information all of tech things, just find some "narative" which is they want it to...."show me the money" ===> if there is starcraft cheat...And show all u got later
