🇮🇳Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's parliamentary response on the weakening of the indian rupee.
-> Rupee weakness is due to a strong US dollar, higher oil prices, and the Middle East conflict.
-> A weaker rupee supports exports but makes imports more expensive
-> RBI does not target a fixed rupee level and acts only to curb excessive volatility.
-> RBI has taken steps to boost forex inflow and support the rupee
-> No timeline has been set for the rupee's recovery
Source: Parliament Reply by the Finance Minister (Department of Economic Affairs)
🇮🇳 INDIA HAS NO TARGET FOR THE RUPEE.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has made it clear:
The government does not target a specific USD/INR exchange rate.
Instead, the rupee is market-driven.
Here's what that means:
• The value of the rupee is determined by market forces, not by a fixed exchange rate or target band.
• The RBI continuously monitors the forex market and intervenes only when it sees excessive volatility.
• The government says it closely tracks exchange rate movements because of their impact on economic growth and fiscal stability.
So why has the rupee been under pressure?
According to the FM, multiple factors have contributed:
• Rising crude oil prices following the Middle East conflict.
• Softer capital inflows.
• Global macro and geopolitical uncertainty.
To ease pressure on the rupee, the RBI has already introduced several measures this year, including:
• Easing External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) rules.
• Expanding investment access for NRIs, OCIs and other overseas investors.
• Launching a concessional forex swap facility to encourage foreign currency inflows.
The government also acknowledged that while a weaker rupee can improve India's export competitiveness...
It can also increase the cost of imports and add pressure on imported inflation. 👀
