During 2022, the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) Sector, which is led by the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD), provided water for 1,120,000 people through the construction and repairmen of 368 water supply networks and 2,890 hand-pumps equipped wells.

During 2022, twenty-one sector partners, including Ru-WatSP as the leading agency of the sector, provided drinking water for over 160,051 households (1,120,350 persons) in different districts of 32 Afghan provinces.

The water was provided through the construction and rehabilitation of 368 pipe schemes (solar-system and gravity-fed pipes schemes) and 2,890 wells equipped with hand pumps.

With @UNICEFAfg support, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program (Ru-WatSP) of MRRD provided clean drinking water for around 160 families in Firuzkuh district of Ghor province by constructing two solar-powered water supply networks. It cost more than $2 million AFN.

MRRD, MoPH, and AKF achieved the ODF status of, respectively, 565, 108, and 86 communities in Waras district. As a result of CLTS implementation in Waras, around 3,160 latrines were newly built, and 8,159 other traditional latrines were improved.

Waras district of Bamyan province was declared as the 8th Open Defecation Free (ODF) district in Bamyan & 65th in the country in a ceremony, arranged in Waras district. Located in the southern part of Bamyan province, the mountainous Waras is one of the eight districts of Bamyan.

It is home to around 121,000 people. There are 18,740 households (HHs) and 759 communities in this district. The Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach, with @UNICEFAfg support, was successfully implemented there by the MRRD, Public Health (MoPH), and AKF
