Grails IV artist @michaelkutsche has deeper and deeper layers behind the chaotic artwork “Goodbye Horses.”
The name is a reference to the Q Lazzarus song that’s written from the perspective of a disillusioned man, who feels life is meaningless and futile. He laments, “All things pass into the night." Kustche finds a parallel with how we’ve considered AI and art. To him, it is not at all meaningless. “It’s not really about if the AI can create an as-complex or as good as yourself. If you yourself find meaning in doing it, you’ll do it regardless.”
The initial inspiration for this artwork is from Max Ernst’s painting “The Triumph of Surrealism,” which sees a similar figure marching wildly, burdened with swaths of fabric and monsters growing out of its limbs. In “Goodbye Horses,” we see a skeleton man, strapped with paint brushes, a VR headset, and keyboard dancing chaotically in mysterious joy. This work is tongue in cheek, and Kutsche seeks to answer questions about what an artist's role is in the creative world now looks like.
“It really challenges the idea of what’s the human artist’s worth in a world where a machine can potentially create or completely replace him.”
Kutsche’s body of work is otherworldly, with brilliantly colorful dystopian environments. His work is at once deeply nostalgic and also brings in references to the modern day, with computers and phones vibrantly littering his paintings.
“The artist’s brain is like a portal into another world…It created this urge for me to create my own version of that.”
During our most recent balance pass, we discovered that Viper’s smoke uptime is shortened in-game. This is due to an update that had unintentionally shipped in 7.09 resulting in reduced smoke duration and cooldown after deactivating Viper’s smoke.
While we hadn’t meant for these to go out, they are a rough preview of some upcoming updates we now have set for Patch 8.08.
We’d never intentionally make balance changes without messaging. But since Viper has proven such a dominant force in the meta even with her smoke duration reduction, we will not be reverting the change before the next update.
