Many Kurds believe PKK is the strongest force standing against KDP, rightly so…PKK is more battled hardened, has more support among Kurds, many sympathize with their resistance against the Turkish state but also in sheer numbers. PKK exists among #Kurdistan’s largest Kurdish population, easily over 20 million in Bakur. They’ve stood their ground against NATO’s second largest military for four decades, a state that has unlimited access when it comes to international tools. Despite this, PKK is still around and are a force that Turkey cannot defeat militarily. That speaks volumes among Kurds.

KDPs support among Kurds is limited to a specific region in South Kurdistan Region. KDPs history is mixed with the betrayal of Kurds—Saddam, Khomeini, Erdogan, Kurdish civil war, and add that with the corruption, nepotism etc. KDP is viewed as solely representing a specific Clan in the name of Kurdistan. Even with that reputation, KDP has the upper hand over PKK—it is no longer on the US terror list, meaning international recognition, standing and access and has the ability to strengthen its soft power.

But I’d argue this: PUK has the ability to be KDPs biggest barrier. PUK has stronger relations among Kurds. Mam Jalal established a strong foundation among Kurds and non Kurds. PUK has positive relations with Rojava and more widely accepted in PKK strongholds where majority of Kurds reside. PUK was also taken off the US terror list at the same time KDP was taken off. Meaning like KDP, they too have international support, recognition, standing and access. Even with the ongoing internal divisions of PUK, they continue to be a wall that KDP cannot bring down. PUK also has a very strong battle hardened force.

If PUK is able to solve its internal disputes while continuing to strengthen its relations with different Kurdish factions across Kurdistan it can transform itself into a very powerful voice and force.

PKK cannot play the same role PUK can, reality is they are still on the terror list. KDPs biggest fear would be the delisting of PKK. Turkey is also fully aware of PKKs strong following and what it would mean for its ally KDP, its (Turkey’s) influence among Kurds if it is delisted.

As we speak, KDP is considered the only faction that has their house in order (of course there’s internal issues like PUK but in terms of perception). Not on terror list, they’re clear on who their leadership is, and they’re using that to their advantage. This is not saying PKK is divided or doesn’t have their house in order, but again they’re on the list and that has deep implications so until then, among the international community—they’re considered illegitimate.

That means the balance of power against KDP can only be tipped by PUK.

We can argue Rojava’s SDF is also capable of tipping the balance of power against KDP. SDF is a force that is internationally recognized, trained and armed with a sizable region under their control with a functioning government. They have positive influence with Bakur and strong relations with PUK. But SDF is still occupied with an ongoing conflict, competing with KDP is simply not in their interests. But once the dust settles (post conflict), KDP will have no choice but to admit and recognize them as a key player among Kurdish powers.

This isn’t about who wins or loses, it’s not about taking KDP down or strengthening PUK. I’m only explaining the power dynamics among major Kurdish players.
