I attended the Mardi Gras meeting today. The room was largely white, with very few people of colour, and was quite hostile towards the trans and non-binary speakers, including people of colour.

The members who supported removing Luna and Damien burst into cheers and applause as the results of their removal were announced. It was disgusting.

I also note that in 2012 Jesse Matheson, the current Mardi Gras CEO, wrote a column for @star_observer proudly proclaiming that he was a “sexual racist”.

In 2023 he said Lidia Thorpe was an “idiot” for her protest that year.

Mardi Gras has a long way to go on issues of racial and trans justice, and its shameful support for police, corporations and Labor and Liberal politicians.
